Our approach is more or less the same.
It's brutal (the lower bushwhacking part), worst when coming down.
We put snowshoes on way above 5000', not sure exactly, maybe 5500.
Once on the ridge, it's not as steep, and get easier the higher you are.
Both North and Middle Chiwaukum are free of snow. Easy scramble.
The little bump below Middle Chiwaukum is of packed snow with cornice on your left. We used crampons and ice axe here.
We had to walk at least 3 miles RT on the road.
