I wanted to go out and stretch my legs, and this trail is a nice little adventure. We started out from the gate closing the campground and wandered across the area until we found a sign for “Radium Lake Trail.” It appears to cut through the campground and ends at the far end near a sturdy bridge. At this point we put on microspikes before crossing since the slight hill leading to it was slick with ice. Beyond the bridge, the ice is a bit more prominent with icicles forming along the sides of the path. From here the trail switch backs before leveling out to follow along the river.
About 3.2 km from the campground (according to a sign) the trail “forks.” In the snow it might look like more of a fork than without snow. At this point the trail veers away from the river up to another fork. This intersection is well marked with a post giving directions, so taking a left lead us up a steeper trail toward the first bridge. From this point the snow gets deeper, and sometimes we broke through. Getting to the first bridge was still a struggle itself. A few hundred meters has a fair amount of loose snow. I had to crawl out of a few holes since I was leading, but we made it through. Judging by the footsteps it looks like most people stop at the first bridge, and we didn’t dare try investigating the snow beyond the bridge.
Nice weather, and a lovely trail made for an overall lovely adventure!
