This is a combination of various short and easy (and mostly paved) trails on the summit plateau of Mt Revelstoke taking in the famous flower meadows. We drove the Meadows in the Sky Parkway, managed to get a good parking spot and then walked up to the summit (1 km) to hit the other trails which barely add up to another 2 km. Do this as a rest-day activity, or a couple of hours of flower photography. If ever I am unable to hike to backcountry meadows, this place will become my salvation.
Having seen my fair share of rich flower meadows I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. I don't know what I would have thought had I never seen alpine flower meadows before - I hope I would be impressed. Paintbrush was the dominant flower but there was a good variety including sitka valerian, partridgefoot, purple daisies and arnica. Early in the season the summit would be covered in glacier lilies (I must stop by sometime ;-)
The First Footsteps (formerly Meadows in the Sky) trail has some nice little First Nations placards with quotes about daily life and what the meadows meant to them.
An interesting feature is the so-called Icebox, a large rock cleft that retains snow throughout the year. It was much bigger than I expected.
Great views from the summit of some very inviting backcountry - I foresee some overnight trips out that way in my future...
