Time for a return trip to Alder Flats and see how things are... so they have been working on the trail a fair bit... the first 2-3km have been widened in sections and all new bridges installed... it’s looking a little torn up in sections but more light hitting the trail now so more sunscreen required in the summer. I hope they do not grade and gravel it like the East Canyon trail... that is just a little too coiffured for my taste but perhaps it just may keep the ill prepared who camp here in the summer off of the harder routes like the Evan's Peak trail.
The most notable facet to be aware of is that the final bridge over to the Alder Flats area has still not been replaced... and with the warm temps this river was high and moving fast... we had to jerry rig some additional trees across the gap to assist in our crossing. Also to get over to my favourite lunch spot at the large rock behind the helipad we had to find a log jam further up the river to allow us to cross over to that area... without it, it would have been boots off to make it.
Aside: I hope they reintroduce the bridge from the East Canyon trail over to the West Canyon side below the flats so the summer trips up Golden Ears will be that much smoother... and probably shave off an hour or more on a car to peak to car trip. Here's to hoping!
With Alder Flats and ascending up the defunct logging road up behind the flats, we ended up with a total cumulative elevation gain of just over 800m... this is an easy trail but it adds up.
Have fun out there, stay safe and see you on the trails!
Regards, Rex.
