Distance done: 16.0km
Elevation done: 1680m
Top 10 on my knee knacker chart. One of the tougher day hikes I have done in the last few years but very rewarding. I will post a GPS track and more info when I have some free time.
Some notes to expand on:
- deceptively long hike time wise, length of hike has no bearing
- no bugs really
- trail is well marked/trodden to the rocky knoll
- first hour is definitely grouse grind like in gain over distance
- scrambling up the backside of the peak in the gulley is less difficult that anticipated and less difficult compared to the scramble to achieve the peaks right ridgeline imho
- boulder fields are a blast to cross (except when wet) as we found out after a sudden raincloud merged from behind the peak and decided to dump on us on our return trip to the knoll
- recommend descend gully just past the knoll when facing the peak to reach the start of the boulder field, if you hike left and contour the steeper left slope you introduce unnecessary exposure and a harder climbing line
- water is scarce after you pass the minor creeks just before you finish your initial grind up to the first ridge so fill up! no snow left on the trail and tarns all dried up except for a stagnant pond.
Have fun out there, stay safe and see you on the trails!
Regards, Rex.
